Day 23 – Guatapé and Pablos Old Mansion

Today we had booked a day trip to Guatapé town which is very famous for the colourful buildings and massive rock. We had to meet at 6.50 in the middle of Medillin and jumped on a bus and off we went.

First stop was at the side of the road for a bite of Colombian breakfast. A plate full of arepas, cheese, scrambled eggs and pineapple and we were back on the road. Not sure we will be having this over and over again.

Next stop, the big rock! 708 steps to get to the top and the views were unreal. Basically this area is where anyone with money will buy a holiday home and come here for the weekend to chill out so there were a lot of massive houses with pools.

After we had a wander round guatape town which was very pretty. Another tourist trap but quite a nice one. We spent a while on the balcony of the cafe people watching with our coffees.

Next and final stop was a boat ride on the dam. The boat trip showed us some of the biggest houses owned by Colombian footballers and finally past pablos old house which had been blown up by a rival cartel. This was so cool to see as it was huge and had a big animals section where he used to have hippos and other animals from around the world.

Back onto the bus and it was straight back to Medillin to get changed and head out for some dinner. We’d bumped into two couples at the top of guatape rock that we’d met on a willy in salento and they’d asked us to join for dinner so we headed out to a Thai restaurant they’d picked which was actually delicious.

We’d realised that the time we had in Medillin was definitely not nearly enough as there was so much to do and see and we were never going to fit it all in but we were definitely trying our best. After a few beers and dinner we headed back to the hostel to bed for another early start to cram what we could before our flight tomorrow afternoon.

G&L xx
